Micro-needling, the treatment of choice today

The beauty industry has no aversion to needles, with therapists having performed Electrolysis for many years.  Micro-needling is a skin rejuvenating treatment that deals with an array of skin dilemmas. We know that when in skilled and capable hands it tightens and regenerates the skin, stimulating collagen synthesis.

This treatment has less downtime compared to laser treatments, which has been a huge attraction for our clients. The number of treatments and length of the needles are determined by the extensiveness of the skin concern.  When administered by a trained professional, micro-needling is proven to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks and wrinkles.

This method has been in use in aesthetic clinics and salons for many years.

The real evolution of skin needling began during the early 20th century and since then the market has been overflowing with devices promising and delivering results. Today, devices range from mechanical to manual models with shorter needle lengths designed for home use via rollers or stamps, to longer needles, designed for skin professional use only.

Micro-needling, as taught at the Beauty Therapy Institute uses a mechanical device with disposable sterile cartridges holding 12 minute needles.  The needle length is controlled by the skilled and experienced therapists, adapting the depth to the areas of need.  When glided across the skin, the needles create tiny holes (micro channels) that trigger the skin’s natural healing process.

Professional Micro-needling is considered a safe skin treatment when performed by a skilled therapist, which should not be confused with home care Micro-needling devices. The treatments offered by trained therapists are more intensive than those performed at home with the results being more visible and effective over a shorter period of time.

“Being a Skincare Therapist in the ever-changing beauty industry, one needs to stay abreast of the latest technologies.  Micro-needling needs to be prioritised as one of those treatments which qualified Therapists should master.  Continually up-skilling is a priority if you are actively working doing Skincare, especially if you wish to perform results-driven treatments” says Gail Barnard, Principal of Beauty Therapy Institute @ Sorbet in Salt River, Cape Town.

In our ongoing quest to offer Skincare students and qualified therapists the most up to date and relevant training, the Beauty Therapy Institute campuses launch their Micro-needling training this month, using the Image Skincare products to enhance this treatment.
